Alec and Mr. Cupples vow to get sober together. Despite their combined efforts, Alec fails two of his exams. Kate goes insane, and drowns. It’s unclear if it was a suicide or an accident. Alec falls ill. He returns home to Howglen and is nursed by Annie and his mother.
